Sports PT team competes in a food donation challenge.

The Sports PT team at the administrtive office in East Syracuse turned a local fundraiser into a friendly competition among co-workers.  The employees were divided into three teams and held a contest to see which team could collect the most donations for a local food pantry community on the east side of Syracuse.  Thannks to the generous and competitive nature of the teams the mission was accomplished.  Bags containing complete Thanksgiving day dinners were distributed to 200 families in need.

This team is no stranger to "giving." Members of our downstate Sports PT family were severley impacted by Hurricane Sandy.  We all continue to reach out and support one another so in the end we are all winners!

Dan Freed-Pastor, DPT of Sports PT of NY is making a difference.

This is Dan's fourth medical missions’ trip to serve and treat the people of Haiti. For Hope International is a non-profit organization which works very closely with Haitian medical professionals and students, both educating them through practice and empowering them to better treat their own people in need.

We asked Dan to descirbe what this expericnece has menat to him. "It is a great opportunity working so closely with American and Haitian medical students and physicians, each one of us realizing how much we stand to benefit from learning just a little more about what each other does.  Each experience has been extremely different and rewarding in its own way, giving me a whole new perspective on the patients and people with whom I work every day. If there is one thing someone reading this could take away, it would be that there is always hope for rebuilding, even when the mainstream news gives an update on progress that is less than promising."

Did you know you can be evaluated and treated by a Physical Therapist without a referral/prescription from a doctor?
Many physical therapy patients are taking advantage of Direct Access. This is an efficient option for patients to recieve immediate care for their orthopedic injuries or ailments without having to go to their doctor first to obtain a referral/prescription. Our physical therapists partner with their patients' doctors.  After being evaluated the therapist will communicate with the patient's doctor as necessary.

Many insurance plans pay for services under Direct Access.  Our Insurance Specialists will verify coverage before the patient's first appointment.  If your insurance plan does not pay for services under Direct Access you have two choices:
1. You can get a referral/prescription from your doctor and we can facilitate that for you.
2. You can pay out of pocket for your treatment.

Direct Access continues to grow beyond New York State, with 30 states allowing physical therapists to evaluate and treat patients without a physician referral, and an additional 14 states allow physical therapists to evaluate, but not treat, patients without referral. Physical Therapy Practice Without Referral: Direct Access.  Alexandria, VA:American Physical Therapy Association, Department of Government Affairs; July 1992.
